The Unstructured Journal

Forget prompts and productivity—sometimes the most valuable writing is the kind that goes nowhere in particular.

There is a whole industry built on journaling prompts, gratitude lists and morning pages with rules. Most of it is well meant and most of it gets abandoned by March, because it turns writing into another task with a right answer.

The unstructured journal has one rule, which is that there are none. A page, a pen, whatever is in your head, for as long as it takes. Some days that is a grocery list. Some days it is the thing you have not said to anyone.

The value is not in the record. Most of it will never be reread. It is in the act of finding out what you think by watching it arrive on the page, which is a thing no prompt can do for you.

Find out what you think by watching it arrive on the page.
